What is a Nebulizer Compressor?
Since you’ve been diagnosed with asthma, chronic bronchitis or emphysema, or any other chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , as part of your respiratory therapy, your doctor has prescribed medicine that must be inhaled directly into your lungs. It is possible to administer these types of medications by using a metered-dose inhaler , and this method is effective; however, you and your doctor may have determined you should use a nebulizer compressor since this makes the process of administering the medication easier.
A nebulizer compressor is an electronic machine that turns liquid medicine into a fine mist. The medicated mist is then pumped through a tube and comes out of a nebulizer mouth piece or mask. In turn, it is a convenient and hassle free method for you to inhale the mist through the mouthpiece or nebulizer mask. How To Properly Administer a Nebulizer Treatment:
The first step in properly administering a nebulizer treatment is to thoroughly clean and wash your hands. We suggest you wash your hands with warm soap and water. Then, thoroughly disinfect by using hand sanitizer. Make sure you’ve placed the nebulizer compressor on hard, sturdy surface close to an electrical outlet. A firm kitchen counter is a good place for this, but any solid surface free from clutter will work. Make sure the area surrounding the nebulizer compressor is clean and disinfected as well.
Note: you must make sure the area is not cluttered so that you do not block air from flowing into the vents of the nebulizer. Once you’ve found the proper surface, plug the nebulizer compressor into the electrical outlet.Carefully unroll the tubing and connect one end of the tubing to the nebulizer compressor. Then, connect the other end of the tubing to the bottom end of the medication cup. See your unit’s user guide for specifics on this. If you need help doing this, please contact Customer Support by calling (800) 653-6888. Open the medication cup by turning the lid in a clockwise fashion, just like opening a jar. You are now ready to put the prescribed amount of medicine into the cup. Note: do not dump the medicine into the middle of the cup. Remember: cautiously pour the medicine around the edges of the cup. After you’ve done this, put the lid back on and turn it in a counter-clockwise fashion until it is tight. Connect the nebulizer mouthpiece or mask attachment to the cup.
Make sure the mask or mouthpiece is secure. Do not lay the medication cup down on its side. This will cause the medication to spill. Turn the nebulizer compressor on. After a few seconds, you will see a fine mist coming out of the mask or mouthpiece. When you see this, you are ready to begin your nebulizer treatment.Insert the mouthpiece into your mouth, or place the mask around your face. Note: you can do this treatment standing up, but we suggest sitting in a comfortable chair so that you sit upright with good posture. This will help you to inhale the medicine deep into your lungs. If you are wearing the nebulizer mask, it is important to breath in through your mouth and not your nose. Take several deep breaths of the mist in between each normal breath. If for any reason you need to stop the nebulizer treatment, be sure to turn off the nebulizer compressor. Depending upon which unit you are using, expect the treatment to take between 8-15 minutes.
At the end of the treatment, you will hear a sputtering sound and the mist will no longer come out of the mouthpiece or mask. There may be a few drops of medication left in the cup, but that is acceptable. At this point, it is safe to turn off the nebulizer compressor and unplug it.
After the Nebulizer Treatment
You will want to thoroughly clean the medication cup, as well as the nebulizer mask or mouthpiece. Do this by disassembling the tubing, cup, and mask or mouthpiece. Then, wash with 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts warm water for several minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Note: do not clean the tubing. Finally, let the components air dry in an area that is free from direct sunlight.
As part of your treatment routine, we suggest you check the air filter in your nebulizer quite often, especially if you are doing several nebulizer treatments per day. If the air filter becomes clogged, it can shorten the lifespan of the compressor.
